Grief Awareness Month 2025

Lonely But Not Alone

This Grief Awareness Month in August, we open the door to conversations about loss—not just the heartbreak, but the quiet, isolating loneliness that often follows. Lonely But Not Alone is a national campaign that builds compassionate spaces where grief is met with connection, understanding, and hope.

Grieving can leave people feeling adrift—even in a crowded room. Through #LonelyButNotAlone, we highlight the invisible aspects of mourning and remind communities that healing is not meant to happen alone.

Whether someone is facing the death of a loved one, the loss of a pet, a relationship, or a life chapter—this campaign urges people to reach out, be present, and offer support.

“Grief isn’t just about loss—it’s about feeling lost. In those moments, connection becomes a lifeline.”

LonelyButNotAlone is the heart of NALAG  Grief Support’s national campaign this August for Grief Awareness Month. It’s all about breaking the silence around grief and loneliness, and creating spaces where people feel seen, heard, and supported.

What are we doing this month:

Letters to the Lonely

We welcome people from all walks of life across Australia to contribute personal reflections or anonymous messages about their experiences with grief. Whether it's a story, a note of encouragement, or a quiet moment captured in words, your contribution can offer comfort to those feeling isolated in their loss. These letters may be shared online to foster connection, understanding, and hope.

#LonelyButNotAloneChallenge

Each week during August we will encourage and guide simple acts of care and connection that you can do in your workplace, friendships and across social media.

We aim to inspire everyday gestures of empathy and connection that help break the silence around grief. The challenge invites people to reach out, share stories, and remind those grieving that they are seen, heard, and supported.

Action: How it works:

  1. Each week we promote an Act of Connection

Ie:

  • Send a text or message to someone who may be grieving
  • Share a memory of a loved one with a friend or online
  • Invite someone for a walk, coffee, or conversation
  • Post a message of kindness or comfort on social media
  • Share a letter from the Letters to the Lonelycollection
  • Light a candle and tag someone you’re thinking of
  1. Encourage Share Using the Hashtag

Post about the act with #LonleyButNotAlone #LonelyButNotAloneChallenge to:

  • Normalize grief conversations
  • Inspire others to take part
  • Spread hope and connection online

Example caption:

Today I reached out to an old friend whose mum passed last year. Just a coffee, no big speech. But it mattered. #NotAlone #GriefAwarenessMonth

  1. Nominate & Tag

Encourage others to join:

  • “I did this today. Who will you reach out to?”
  • Tag 1–3 people to spread the challenge

Yellow Ribbon Pins

NALAG has a supply of Yellow Awareness Pins for our Members, Volunteers and the community. These pins are designed to be worn to ignite conversations about grief. We hope that you can wear one of these pins, and if asked what the yellow represents, it will start a conversation about grief.

Why Yellow? Yellow is the colour of wattle which is the symbol of grief. Just as everyone's experience of grief is difference, there are 1000's of types of wattle across Australia and one is always blooming in Australia throughout the year.
