About the Course
Loss can affect every part of a person’s life. Whether it is bereavement, divorce, miscarriage, loss of employment or another significant change, understanding grief can help us know what to say, how to respond and how to support others.
The NALAG Introduction to Loss & Grief course provides participants with an understanding of grief, contemporary grief theories and practical strategies for supporting people experiencing loss.
The course is interactive and experiential, with opportunities for discussion, reflection and skills development.

- Understanding grief and different types of loss
- Recognising grief reactions and different ways of grieving
- Contemporary theories and models of grief
- The role of attachment and factors influencing grief
- Practical communication and grief support skills
- Strategies for confidently supporting someone experiencing loss
Optional NALAG Volunteer Session
Interested in volunteering with NALAG Grief Support? Stay for an additional two-hour session exploring the NALAG Grief Support Volunteer pathway, including the application process, suitability assessment and additional training requirements. Please note: Completion of this course does not automatically qualify participants to provide client support, addiotnal requirements and application process can be foudn on our website.
Who Should Attend?
The course is open to anyone in the community and may be particularly valuable for counsellors, psychologists, social workers, nurses, teachers, welfare workers, funeral directors, pastoral care workers, chaplains, students and community volunteers.
About the Presenter
Amy Welbourne – Grief Support Educator & Lead Counsellor
Amy Welbourne is a registered counsellor with the Australian Counsellors Association (ACA MCOS 29916) and serves as an Educator and Lead Counsellor for NALAG Grief Support. She brings extensive experience from child and youth mental health services, schools, and private practice. Amy has a strong interest in child and adolescent grief, loss, and family therapy. She is currently the only counsellor in Australia trained in Trauma & Grief Component Therapy for Adolescents (TGCTA), completed through the Trauma & Grief Center in Houston, Texas.
